Bible Study Resources

I am asked a lot about resources to study the Bible.  Over the years, I have depended on one commentary.  While I have ready many books, lessons and commentaries, one stands out above the rest… J. Vernon McGee.

Dr. McGee has been dead for over 20 years but his words live on through his writings and radio show.  In fact, many listeners to his show are not even aware he is dead! (article)  I have enjoyed reading and collecting Dr. McGee’s commentaries for many years.  I have found him to be plain spoken, clear and practical in his approach to God’s Word.

J. Vernon McGee’s “Through the Bible” commentary series covers every book in the Bible.  The commentaries are grouped by books of the Bible.  Each verse is covered and McGee comments in a way that helps tell the story.  I enjoy his funny stories and anecdotes that aid in understanding.

Speaking on God’s grace, McGee said, “When I hear Christians say, “I don’t do this, and I don’t do that, and I am following a set of rules,” I immediately recognize that they know very little about the grace of God. They are trying to live the Christian life in their own strength. But Paul says, “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”

Dr. McGee has left a collection of thoughts and words that have helped me step through a deeper understanding of God’s grace and many other topics from the Bible.  I hope you will explore this resource and others as you explore God’s Word.
